Short description
This CSFD webinar brings together Dr. Eduardo Martins, an expert in drought monitoring and public policy, and Johannes Kruse, a specialist in the economics of nature-based solutions (NbS), to examine the pressing challenge of building drought resilience in the context of land degradation and desertification. As the frequency and intensity of droughts increase globally with particular impacts across arid and semi-arid regions, the need for integrated approaches that combine scientific knowledge, sound policy, and economic rationality becomes more urgent.
Dr. Eduardo Martins will explore drought management and policy strategies aimed at strengthening resilience, with a particular focus on how early warning systems and governance mechanisms can support proactive and sustainable drought response. He will also briefly present a nature-based solution case study from Ceará, Brazil (PRODHAM), as an example of how local initiatives can be aligned with broader policy goals.
Johannes Kruse will draw from the recently published global Economics of Drought report emphasizing the importance of economic valuation in assessing the benefits of NbS, illustrating their cost-effectiveness compared to conventional land solutions and the high costs of inaction.
